ufgenetics.com is developed by the University of Florida’s Scientific Thinking and Educational Partnership program (STEP). STEP assists UF faculty to communicate their research to targeted audiences – such as middle school and high school teachers, science journalists, and the general public – through multimedia outreach programs. STEP's overall goal is to improve the quality of decision making and problem solving in the sciences, focusing on developing this capacity in our citizens.
The specific purpose of ufgenetics.com is to encourage students and the public to learn more about genetics. Genetics affects every aspect of our life, from the food we eat to the medicine we take. However, many people do not understand what genetics is all about. ufgenetics.com exposes middle school and high school students to genetics research being conducted at the University of Florida. These projects all have some connection to genetics – in people, plants, and animals. ufgenetics.com was funded by the University of Florida Genetics Institute, the Division of Continuing Education, and the Institute for Food and Agricultural Sciences. Special thanks to NASA and its Visible Earth project for images used on this Web site and in other educational materials.
